Rumor Has It

Though the current situation in the Gulf is terrible, the rumors and uncertainty of what areas the oil is effecting has caused some confusion to vacationers interested in the Gulf Coast of Florida. If you watch the news media, they show horrendous photos of oil drenched places but the problem is, the media does not specify what those areas are. The news media's soul interest is to sell papers and gain viewers but they do not always sell reality. The reality is this, currently the majority of the Gulf Coast of Florida is seeing little to none of the effects from the spill as of yet. A graph, shown here on msnbc shows specifically where the spill has gone day by day and as of today, it is no where near the peninsula of Florida.

So if you have been planning a vacation to Florida or are considering it, come on down. The waters fine, the weather's warm and the beaches are still beautiful as ever!

Vacation Rentals

The Gulf Coast of Florida is one of the most desirable vacation spots in the world. Millions of tourists visit Florida's beaches every year and tourism makes up the largest portion of the state's economy. With that said, sometimes, in popular areas, it can be difficult to find a nice vacation rental.

Florida Scallop Season

Ok, so there is good news out of bad news. Unfortunately, yes, the Gulf oil spill drama is horrible and it could get worse. Florida is already beginning to feel the negative effects of vacationers changing plans to travel to the Gulf beaches but before everyone gets too carried away, the Florida Wildlife Commission has bumped up the opening day of scallop season! Hurray!

And though the oil spill could effect our coast at some point in time, despite the spew the media are spreading, IT HAS NOT HIT the Steinhatchee area yet. Currently information is that it may not even effect the area if the Gulf current catches it and sweeps it Southward.

So, for all of you scallop lovers - note the appetizing scallop poboy above - according to the FWC and the Visit Florida website, scallop season will open two weeks early this year on Saturday, June 19th as opposed to the traditional opening date of July 1.

So, pack up your snorkels - bay scallops may only be harvested by hand or with a dip net - and head on down for an early opening to gather up some of these tasty bivalves!

Steinhatchee literally means "Deadman's River" and the bay at the mouth of the river is called "Deadman's Bay". The area is well known for the local scalloping season from July to September. Snorkeling for sea scallops is one of the most popular attractions to Steinhatchee and is the busiest time of year drawing visitors from across the country. The area is also known for great fishing in the Gulf of Mexico providing a wide variety of local seafood and sport, as well as hunting, boating, swimming in the beautiful natural springs located around the area and a wide variety of other water sports including visiting area beaches. Steinhatchee is a great vacation place for a change from the fast-paced world we all live in, to a relaxed and peaceful atmostphere.
